The National Gallery of Art is an American Treasure

The National Gallery of Art is a museum for everybody to enjoy whether you want to be indoors to beat the summer heat or outside to see the sculpture garden. The day I visited was hot, or as they say “in the double 90s, ninety degrees Fahrenheit and 90% humidity.

Located just a few blocks from the Capitol building on the mall is really a collection of buildings itself that spills out to the sculpture garden with a gigantic fountain and lots of large scale sculptures with gardens all around, even a cafe. I liked the whole place and would return anytime because there is so much to enjoy and they change the exhibits. Like most other large museums the art on display is only a fraction of the entire collection plus they participate in noteworthy traveling exhibits.

There are organized family activities and special programs for kids but we found just walking around, taking it all in was a delight. Did my description of the hot weather scare you? In winter they have ice skating in the sculpture garden.

Easy on the wallet, admission is free to everyone and open almost everyday of the year. The visiting hours are: Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
